Every year my kids always want to know what I want to do for Father’s Day, but we end up doing the same thing – it never changes. I love fishing. It’s one of those things I can do and totally relax. Typically, I can escape from anything that is stressing me out or that I need to think out, sort out or make adjustments to. It’s nice to have an out. A Zen. And the best part about my favorite activity is that my kids love it too (or so they tell me). We have such a good time going out on the boat with our snacks, basking in the sun and just enjoying each other’s company. Away from the chaos, away from our realities. Everything feels so still and simple. Although, the activity stays the same, the type of fishing we do has changed over the years. There are several different types and I haven’t quite pinned down which is our favorite. There are differences to each type that make them appealing in different ways. Here is the run down on our favorites.
Fresh Water Fishing: This type is perfect for us it can be done from the shore or a boat, a bridge or dock, lake or pond, river or stream. And the amount of techniques and gear, baits and lures depending what type of fish you are after is endless. Freshwater fish we typically see are bass, trout, salmon, walleye, musky, crappie, catfish, etc.
Fly Fishing: This type involves using artificial flies to catch fish in salt or fresh water. Catching the fish requires tricking the fish to bite on or just below the surface of the water. The majority of the fish we see with this method is trout, salmon, pan fish, carp, tarpon, bone fish or striped bass.
Deep Sea Fishing: This is more of a luxury for us, but it is, for sure, one of our favorites. The kids and I love spend a day out on the deep blue see catching all sorts of critters. This type can be as simple or as complex as you wish – beginners can start fishing from the beach and then build up to fishing from a boat for some prized sport-fish.
If you get the chance to take your kids for a fishing trip on father’s day, do some research on the type of equipment and tactics used on different types of fishing. It will make the day more enjoyable for you and the kids.
